The fact that you're asking the question seems to indicate that you know this is at best a useless habit, and at worst a social Horror. Reading the question makes my skin shudder. What may not be obvious is that if you are producing enough mucous for this to be a problem, it is possible that you should mention this to you doctor soon. She/he may have some ideas about what is happening and how to address it.

You might try any number of things, depending on where you are and on how serious the habit is.

  • Put a rubber band around one wrist, and when you get the urge, just gently snap the band. It's not meant as a punishment, but as a mild focus of attention. The snap invites you to do whatever you were doing before the urge came.
  • Make a habit of carrying water with you, and at the urge to 'munch', take a sip of water instead.
  • Get into the habit of carrying a handkerchief, and at the urge, gently blow your nose.
  • If possible, go to the bathroom or restroom at the urge, and gently wash your face with a splash of water, and your hands with soap and water. No snacking.
  • I'm avoiding suggesting that you eat something else at the urge, because that may start a problem that is as bad or worse. Maybe use a toothpick, or chew a small piece of sugar free gum.
  • In fact, try any of the above at the slightest urge to touch any part of your face.
