Listen to lots and lots of songs, and not just the lyrics. You can start to figure out how the melody and the lyrics fit together. There is no way to teach someone to do this; you just pick it up by listening and making connections. The melody/music might bring to mind situations or emotions. Upbeat? Happy? Thoughtful? Heartbroken? Then you just go for it.
