The story takes place in the land of the Danes and the land of the Geats. The land of the Danes is modern day Denmark and the land of the Geats is modern day southern Sweden. In the 5th and 6th century those areas would be part of Scandinavia.

It is not totally sure when Denmark became a country. in the beginning of the 8. century the city of Ribe was build. the city was so big that it is likely that a great king have ordered the project. the first time you hear the name Denmark is about the year 965 when the king Harald Bluetooth raised a rune stone for his parents. it says: Haraltr Kunukr bath kaurua kubl thausi aft Kurm fathur sin auk aft Thaurui muthur sina sa haraltr ias sar uan Tanmaurk ala auk Nuruiak auk tani kartyhi kristna. This means: King Harald ordered these stones build for his father Gorm and his mother Thyra. that Harald that gathered all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christians. so in the end of the viking age we can be sure that the Danes called there land Denmark. the name Denmark means the border of the Danes.
