It is impossible to "overfeed" a fish. They stop eateing when they are full and have had enough to eat. If you add more food to a tank than a fish will eat, the food will be left to go rotten and will poison the water. Poisoning the water is the danger in "overfeeding" fish. If you want your goldfish to reach its maximum potential size then you will need to supply it with at least 10 gallons of water to live in (more is better). The water should be filtered with a properly cycled filter and the tank should have at least 50% of its water changed every week. It should be fed morning and evening as much as it will eat in 15 minutes (stop adding food when it stops eating and remove any left over food.)

The bigger the tank you provide, the bigger and healthier your goldfish will be.
Many times, these fish are sick or old when they are purchased. goldfish actually have a life span of 15 years. the main reason of early death is because people either overfeed or forget to extract chlorine. other cases of early death is high stress for goldfish and having no filter.
