The mileage is stored in the BCM not the cluster, so you can replace the cluster without changing the odometer reading.

I had read that what you have to do is after you replace the cluster try to start it once. Leave the key in the on position for at least 10 minutes and that is supposed to reset the anti-theft system and it should start and run fine.

The computer had to be reset. Had the same problem and thought it was a sensor but only took the computer being "reset" by the dealership. Cost $200 in Dallas area. The problem is not with the computer. this is a common problem on all 03-06 GM Vehicles if you wanna get it fixed Just go to www.speedomtergaugerepair.com They fixed my instruments cluster on my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. They charged me $150 to replace all the gauges in the cluster. here is the address in case you wanna check it out: www.speedometergaugerepair.com

AnswerThe 98 Pontiac stores the odometer in the instrument panel cluster. The odometer can be reprogramed either by the dealer or there are companies that will re-program it for you (seach google, there are lots). Or you can buy the odometer programmer for about $1000 but its cheaper to just send the cluster module in. (not only is it legal to reset the odometer; its required in most states when you replace the engine. The odometer is required to reflect the mileage of the engine *NOT* the vehicle)

The reset knob is located under a rubber grommet near the instrument panel or computer. Simply remove the grommet and use a screwdriver or stick to depress the knob.

this should of been done by your dealer if you still under the maintence program. however if you do it yourself its fairly easy. first turn the car on and the key to position two, then hold down the trip button in your instrument cluster down, hold it until a little red microfilter symbol appears in the middle of you cluster, let go of the button and press and hold it again. then a reset will appear in the cluster. let go and push the button again. this should reset it. check in your service data through the i drive and verify it did reset. turn off the car and your done.

Yes, just replace the battery. It will not harm the computer (ECU) and you will only have to reset the radio presets and the clock.

It may be a button to push or a screw to take out of one place on the back of the instrument cluster and screw it into another place on the back of the instrument cluster. Izuzu was real big on doing that back in the day.
