You prevent it by beginning to always bring a drink with you when you smoke. I always make sure to have a drink with me for multiple reasons. Helps cool down the heat in your throat from smoking, feels extremely relieving having a drink if you start coughing, and helps if you get cotton mouth. It also seems to fade away a bit with time. I used to get cotton mouth very badly when I first starting smoking, but now after about 6 years I only get it rarely.
