Unfortunately not. Even if you save the game to your hard drive, you still need the game in the system to play it. As soon as you take it out, the xbox goes back to the dashboard.
The purpose for the "save to hard drive" option is to speed up in-game loading processes, that's all.

You can either play on the same xbox or you could do a system link with two xboxs.
Yes, all you need to do is install the game on an xbox. Take apart the xbox you installed it on and the disc drive. Run the game and when the disc stops spinning and is running off the hard drive take it out and put it in the other xbox. This works with all games.
The first halo does not have xbox live. Only system link.
