although its not in the Yamaha data base the 10th digit suggests its a 1986
1997-2001
Zoom released the 505 series in 1996.
No answer but..... You might try posting this question in a guitar or musical instrument section. I own a Yamaha FG-140 guitar. Great guitar, but I don't know how to relate s/n to production date.
2002-2003 it was made , the series should be on the headstock of the stratocaster but worst case scenario bring it to a guitar shop and see what they think , as it's hard to tell you without looking at the guitar.
The first Guitar Hero release was 8th November 2005, and Guitar Hero II was relase 7th November 2006. The previous answer claiming 2007 as the release date was the year for Guitar Hero III, made available 28th October 2007. Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II were developed by Harmonix, but the rights to the series was owned by Red Octane, and with the aquisition of Red Octane by Activision, Guitar Hero III onwards has been developed by Neversoft, with ports to other platforms done by other companies. Harmonix have since gone on to create their own rock based music game series called Rock Band, the first in the series was released 20th November 2007.

As a guitar teacher I can say yes, a 12 year old should play a full size guitar.
