Roman Catholic Answer:The priest is the normal way in which God comes to a person and that person comes to God. It is the priest who, normally, begins one life in Christ with Baptism. The priest hears your first confession and gives you your first Holy Communion. The priest oversees your instruction in the faith, performs your marriage, continues to hear your confession and gives you God's absolution; and gives you Holy Communion throughout life. He baptises your children, anoints you when you are ill, and finally at the end of your life hears your last confession, gives you Viaticum (Holy Communion for the dying for the journey to the next world) and gives you Last Rites. Finally, after you have died, he performs your funeral and burial, he prays for your soul to help you in purgatory. Bottom line, the only reason we are here on earth, living this life is to spend eternity with God, and the only way in which we are going to accomplish that is through the priest, I should rate his important clear off the scale high!
