National insurance is a scheme where people in work make payments towards benefits. The payments are called national insurance contributions and certain benefits are only payable if you meet the national insurance contribution conditions. National insurance contributions also go towards the costs of the National Health Service. The national insurance scheme is administered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).If you claim a benefit or tax credit, you will need a national insurance number. This applies even if it is not a benefit which depends on national insurance contributions. You will also need to supply your national insurance number in other circumstances, for example, when you get a new job.National insurance contributions (NICs) See the Related links below.

National insurance is a scheme by which everyone pays into a pot via their wages, that the government holds on to. This pot is used to cover things like unemployment benefit, subsidising of healthcare, and other things. If you never get sick and are always in work, then you'll never get anything back from the national insurance scheme. If however you have an accident and have to go to hospital then the national insurance will cover the costs of any treatment you receive. Unfortunately this is not an optional scheme, everyone who is working pays into it, but it is there for the benefit of everyone.

Well, it doesn't much matter how much it costs; I am, and have been paying contributions for the "National Health Scheme" in the UK for forty odd years, and have used it once only. Seems to me I am in credit with them (as are probably most of the people) so with this in mind, why should we need insurance; isn't our contributions insurance enough. If not, then a refund is required, probably to donate to BUPA......
