Are there schools for the blind?

Yes, Schools for the blind are fairly common. There is one located in South Carolina. They give the students a dorming opportunity and an opportunity to meet other blind children of their own age. However, in my opinion the child would much happier and more successful in your local public school system. A visually impaired child is fullly capable of achieving this. There was a time when integrating sighted and blind children to me seems a good alternative. But after seeing for years the situation at the Davao School and Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired I noticed that blind children studying together under the guidance of their sighted teachers learn more. A paradoxical case - a blind child blind teaching another blind child. But they understand each others needs better. The atmosphere where all of them are blind is a lot better - there is no dominance from the sighted members of the class. They interact as equals...and learning is faster it seems. They play basketball and chess among themselves. Watching them from a distance, you would not think that they were blind - the run and move like sighted children playing in school.

What is a school of herring called?

If the school is strictly for the hearing impaired it is referred to as "School for the Deaf". There is also "School for the Blind" & "Training Schools" for the mentally disabled (however, this is an outdated term). If a school encomppases several special need students it can have other names.
