A pardon is a declaration of forgiveness and freedom from punishment. The president may also issue a reprieve, an order to delay a person's punishment until a higher court can hear the case, or grant amnesty, a pardon toward a group of people.

The president can delay the punishment of a person by issuing a pardon or a commutation. A pardon absolves the individual of the crime and its consequences, while a commutation reduces the severity of the punishment, such as shortening a prison sentence. Both actions effectively provide relief from legal penalties and can be applied in cases of federal offenses.
This could get a bit confusing . . . but . . . it sounds as if a motion requesting the delay of a court ruling or an action has been submnitted to the court. The opposing side wishes to argue against the request for delay, and has answered that request with an application (i.e.: motion) to "stay" the delay request (in other words NOT grant the request for delay). Clear now??

Socrates chose not to delay drinking the poison because he believed in following the law and accepted the punishment handed to him by the court. He also viewed death as a release from the suffering of old age and saw the opportunity to teach through his own death.
I have been trying to collect the court ordered child support ordered and with no luck. Now I have filed a contempt of court order and it is due before the judge shortly. Is it possible for him to delay it any longer, or is the appearance before the judge final?
