The International Assistance Force (IAF) was created by the United Nations in 2001 in response to the need for security and stability in Afghanistan following the fall of the Taliban regime. The force was initially established under UN Security Council Resolution 1386, which authorized the deployment of a multinational force to assist the Afghan government and maintain order. The IAF was primarily led by NATO, which took command in 2003 and expanded the mission to include training Afghan security forces and supporting reconstruction efforts.
