The telescope was invented in 1608 by Hans Lippershey. It is believed that he generally used it as a spyglass like binoculars on earth.
Jacob Metius also independently invented the telescope at virtually the same time, but applied for a patent a few weeks after Hans.
In 1609 Galileo Galilei built his first telescope with 3x magnification, and used it to observe space. Galileo was the first human to observe the moons around Jupiter, and later, Galileo published the first article on the moons around Jupiter in 1610.
