"Carolina" was granted a royal charter in 1663. If we consider this the beginning of "North Carolina" this would be the 8thof the 13 colonies formed. (This is the usual way the colony is counted.)However, the official division into "North" and "South" Carolina did not take place until 1729 (and in 1732 part of South Carolina was set apart to become Georgia). Since New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were founded between 1663 and 1729, North Carolina as a distinct colony might then be counted as the 11th colony formed.

The colony of Connecticut was formed in 1636 by Minister Thomas Hooker and Governor John Haynes. The colony of Rhode Island was also formed in 1636 when Roger Williams was kicked out of Massachusetts Colony over what were viewed as controversial viewpoints at the time. He and his followers founded Providence and Rhode Island colony.

The Thirteen Colonies were originally settlements founded for different reasons such as to practice religion freely, earn money from Natural Resources, as well as have a completely different lifestyle. Over many years settlements turned into colonies and thus the Thirteen Colonies were formed.
Carolina never really split. The original colonies were always refered to as the carolinas, and were formed at the same time indepentedently.
