Two events helped spur a much larger migration by 1849. First, the U.S. victory in the Mexican War (1846-1848) gave the young nation vast new areas of land in the West. Second, a gold rush in California in 1849 attracted droves of American fortune seekers called "Forty-Niners." The gold rush also attracted Chinese, Europeans, South Americans, and others, all hoping to strike it rich.
The native Americans were continually moved westward because the new colonists desired the land that they were living on, and as the population of the colonists (and later Americans) grew they needed more and more land. The Mormon Pioneers moved west on the Mormon trail between 1845 and 1870, when the train came through and became the more common mode of transportation. The biggest years for travel on the Mormon trail were in the 1850's. After the railroad, Mormons continued to move west, but usually came individually as the need for organized companies no longer existed, so the numbers are harder to pinpoint.
