Battle Of Britain
Occurring during World War II in 1940, the Battle of Britain was about two things. First, it was about controlling the air-space above the British home-islands. Second, it was about the impending German invasion of those islands: if the Germans could control British air-space, then their invasion could begin.
Because they did not control the skies over Britain. Also, their campaign in North Africa was not going very well. This and other fronts required sending troops that were needed for the invasion.
In 1940 Britain was deficient in military defense if a German army was able to land an invasion force on British soil. Britain's defense depended on the Royal Navy to control the English Channel. The Royal Navy did control the channel because it had convenient bases and a large number of cruisers that were well armed and could sink any German transport ships. The German navy was far too weak to combat Britain's navy in the channel.

During World War II, Germany did not in fact ever invade London. The Germans hoped to conquer it as part of their planned invasion (in 1940) of the British Isles. Yet, the necessary requirement for any invasion was control of Britain's air-space, and this was never achieved by the German air force.
Occurring in October of 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar was significant for several reasons. It is often described as contributing to Napoleon's decision to forego an invasion of Great Britain, since control of the seas remained in British hands. Undeniably, it contributed to the already substantial reputation of British naval skill while providing the British and their allies with further motivation to remain in the fight against the imposing force of Imperial France.
It concluded with the RAF in control of the skies over the Channel and German invasion plans being postponed/
