In chapter 7: Shadows and Tall Trees the majority of the biguns went in search of the beast. While they were making their way from castle rock along the shoreline towards the mountain Ralph lapsed into a day dream. he imagined being back in a cottage in which he had once lived, which was on the edge of the moors. Ralph remembered feeding wild ponies at the garden wall, laying in a shed watch the snow fall and going to bed with a bowl of cornflakes with sugar and cream. He also remembered the books on the shelf near his bed.
