A wage slave? In medieval times a serf didn't get paid and the peasant earned his living working for the manor house/estates. He didn't get paid either, but his payment was having a small hovel to live in, a patch of land for a garden, maybe a cow or pig or two and to be able to die for the lord of the estates when there was a war. These people didn't earn wages. The nobility did not earn wages, but they did earn power and lands.
