That depends on the Pokemon you use. Usually a balance of levels is good (like all six at level 30, 40, ect. rather one being super powerful. Like having you favorite at level 80 while the others are level 15). Also a variety of elements work best (like one be psychic, another be fire, rather than all six be the same element so that you can fight other elements easier. It would be hard to beat a guy who uses electric Pokemon if you have nothing but water Pokemon for example). Use your best judgment when deciding your standard team. Your rival will have a balanced team also. His team will consist of Pokemon with the following elements:
Psychic
Fire
Water
Flying
Grass
Rock
As for a line up itself, the more different the elements and the more equal leveled they are, the better off you are.

the best Pokemon in fire red is lugiaAnswerthe best Pokemon in fire red is lugia
There is no "best" Pokemon because every Pokemon has its own weaknesses and strengths against other types of Pokemon,
In Pokemon firered you can't, but in Pokemon leafgreen you can get it then trade it to Pokemon firered.
