Yes, you technically CAN get a shiny magikarp but its not automatic. You have the same chances of getting a shiny magikarp as you do a shiny Pokemon from any other kind of egg. The parents don't automatically make it a shiny magikarp.
There are only Magikarps' in the water at the resort area. If you use a Super Rod, you can hook a Level 100 Magikarp. A level 100 Magikarp can never evolve into a Gyarados because.... its at level 100 unless you use a hack.
Catch a Magikarp. It will only know Splash & Tackle. You can't use a water stone on Magikarp. You will have to power up your Magikarp to level 20. Once it is level 20, it wil evolve into a Gyarados. You cannot teach Magikarp new abilities until it is a Gyarados. Note: For Magikarp to evolve, TRAIN it until it IS level 20! After it evolves, you can teach it new moves such as Surf & Dragon Rage.
If you are going to evolve a Magickarp in Pokemon Platinum you need to: 1. Go and find yourself a MagicKarp(of course if your going to evolve a MagicKarp) 2.level up that MagicKarp to lvl 20 and then it evolves.( It will learn how to use bite when it evolves). P.S I hoped this helped you!
CATCH A WATER TYPE POKEMON!!! BUIZEL!,MAGIKARP!
magikarp because it cant learn tms or HMS and its only attack is splash wich does nothing
I think it's when you see triple Gyarados, because I caught a Pokemon that I didn't know. I caught Magikarp.

Level 20. Gyarados cannot be found in the wild any less than level 20, because that's the point at which it evolves from Magikarp.
You can catch red Gyarados anywhere because red Gyarados are only shiny but are extremely rare.
First level a magikarp at level 40 don't let it evolve at level 20.When your magikarp is level 40 use a sunstone it will evolve into a RED GYARADOS. THIS IS A HOAX!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.Are you sure because i tried to level up my magikarp from level 35 to 40 without evolving it. then i tried to use a sun stone on magikarp but the stone didn't work on magikarp. you must be lying.of course he is lying if you could use a sunstone on magikarp then they would have done it on the show basically i think this is true you go to sootopollis and keep fishing till you find a gold magikarp and then you can continue from that evolves into red gyarados i think i got it from someone who told me im still looking anyway hoped it helped.

Magikarp and Shedinja. Magikarp because it can only learn splash, tackle, and flail. Shedinja because it can only have 1 hp for its whole life.
Here are two ways to get Shiny Gyarados (Red Gyarados):Trade the Shiny Gyarados from Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold that you have gotten in the Lake of Rage to Pokemon Diamond.Fish or swim in the area where Gyarados spawn vastly. However, this is the longest way to do it, because the shiny rate is 1/8192. I'd recommend trading from SoulSilver or HeartGold.
You'll find a shiny Gyarados in any area that you can fish for Gyarados. You have to be very lucky, though, because the chances of encountering a shiny Pokemon is 1/8192.

Gyarados's weakness is Thunder and Dragon.=] Try out Pokemon Platinum,Diamond,Pearl, and Crystal Version. It has Gyarados in it. -Aznlilife Actually, Gyarados's Weaknesses would be Rock and Lightning. Gyarados is a water\flying type, flying being weak to rock/electricity and water being weak to electricity. If you used an electric type attack on Gyarados, it would do x4 damage instead of x2. using a grass type move on Gyarados would only have a x1 damage ratio because, well you can figure that out. Gyarados is not weak to dragon because GyARADOS IS NOT DRAGON. only dragon is weak against dragon. -tuttle
