How do you find the red Gyarados in diamond version?

Catch a Magikarp. It will only know Splash & Tackle. You can't use a water stone on Magikarp. You will have to power up your Magikarp to level 20. Once it is level 20, it wil evolve into a Gyarados. You cannot teach Magikarp new abilities until it is a Gyarados.

Note: For Magikarp to evolve, TRAIN it until it IS level 20! After it evolves, you can teach it new moves such as Surf & Dragon Rage.

You can find them in waters where Pokemon are at level 20 or up.

You can also find them in the waters around the gym in Sootopolis City. Mostly there are Magikarp, but sometimes if you fish with a Super Rod, a Gyarados can bite on it.

Note that this only works in Sootopolis with fishing with a Super Rod. Surfing doesn't work as it will only appear Magikarp.

1. The easiest way is to trade for the red Gyarados you can get in HeartGold or SoulSilver
2. A red Gyarados is the same as a shiny Gyarados so if you encounter a Gyarados there is a 1 in 8192 chance of it being shiny.
3. You could catch a shiny Magikarp (at the same odds) and evolve it at level 20.
4. You could breed a normal Gyarados and get a shiny Magikarp (at the same odds) and evolve it at level 20
5. You could use the Masuda Method of getting shinies (breed foreign Ditto with a pokemon) to hatch a shiny Magikarp at the odds of 1 in 2048 and evolve it at level 20

Basically, you can only catch a 100% certain red Gyarados in HeartGold or SoulSilver or Gold, Silver and Crystal.

Its super rare to find a red gyrados because you must constantly fish for a gyrados until it appears red you have a 1/8000 chances to see one so trade the red gyrados from heartgold or soulsilver to diamond to have it.
