Honestly there are a ton of these but the most popular is probably Starship Troopers. It was actually based on a book by Robert Heinlein and it didn't have much to do with the bugs, it was more about Rico discovering himself as a person and a soldier, and as a leader. Neat book. Pretty ok movie too, I guess. The book was (probably still is) on the required reading list at the US Naval Academy. Part of the reason is that Heinlein, believe it or not, attended Annapolis and graduating in 1929 with a commission and served for 5 years before being discharged for medical reasons. The other is that the book provides insight into the learning and growth of an officer.
