Lake-Town's actual name in The Hobbit is Esgaroth, built of wood and situated entirely in the Long Lake.
Esgaroth/Lake-Town is not to be confused with the city of Dale, built between the Lake and the Lonely Mountain (Mount Erebor). Dale was destroyed by Smaug when he took over the Lonely Mountain, but was resettled after the dwarves reclaimed Erebor and Smaug was killed.
Bard was born and lived in Laketown.
Laketown is inhabited by men, though they must seem like strange creatures to a Dwarf.
In Tolkien's The Hobbit, the Master of Esgaroth (Laketown) runs away when the dragon begins to destroy the town.
It was destroyed by Smaug. What wasn't burned by his fiery breath was crushed when he fell on it.
The Hobbit is fairly linear. There are a few places where the time line backs up, particularly when the dwarves and Bilbo are exploring Smaug's den and Smaug is attacking Laketown.

The Hobbit contains many human characters, including the men of Laketown, most notably Bard the Bowman. Gandalf appears in human form, but he is not a human.
