In the novel, the parishioners regard Arthur Dimmesdale as the utmost example of charm, purity, and religious strength, never suspecting until the very end that something might be wrong (much less that he'd fallen in love and then impregnated the woman who later became considered to be the village harlot - for getting pregnant out of wedlock - and who he then abandoned to face the persecution of their deed alone). They literally put him up on a pedestal, placing a large amount of mislaid pressure on him in the process. (Basically, they think he's where it's at, and are blind to any other reality, even as they watch him slowly killing himself from guilt and grief, growing weaker and sicker as the novel progresses.)
