In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," Jem decides to return to the Radley yard to retrieve his pants that got caught on the fence earlier in the story. He goes back despite feeling scared because he doesn't want Atticus to find out about their previous nighttime adventure. Eventually, Jem's fear and guilt lead him to understand the importance of honesty and facing consequences.
