Scout realizes Mayella must be the loneliest person. She has no friends because the Negroes won't have her because she is white and the whites won't have her because she is low in society. She doesn't have a good family background to make any friends. Tom was helping her out just to be nice because he "felt sorry" for her situation since no one, not even her own family members, would help her.
