Identification of soldiers killed in action (WW2)In the British Army all soldiers had a small metal disc that hung (under their clothing) from the neck. It gave the name and number. In addition, soldiers often had things like their military ID cards with them and possibly things like a letter.

Obviously, if a shell exploded very close to a soldier all of this could be destroyed. However, even then identification was sometimes possible by a process of elimination if other bodies could be identifed.

AnswerWorld War 2 id. dog tags around your neck

American GI's wore dog tags. Personal items were often marked with their name (like a bible). Items like helmet support straps were often marked with the owners name. US Marines battle shirts were marked with the owners name. Weapons were issued and serial numbers recorded by supply. Fingerprints were another way to identify casualities. Did the unknown soldier lead the US to victory?

No. The unknown soldier was simply a soldier who was killed in action during the First World War, and who could not be identified. Since then, other unknown service members have been placed there, as well. At least one person KIA in Vietnam and interned in the Tomb of the Unknowns has since been identified.

Who is the Unknown Soldier?

Are you referring to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? If so, it represents all of the soldiers who died in action that were not able to be identified. Because they don't know who they are, they can't contact family, but are still deserving of a burial with honors.AnswerThe US has four Unknown Soldiers; from World War 1, World War 2, Korea, and Vietnam. By the time it was decided to have an Unknown Solder from Vietnam, forensic science had progressed to the point that it was very difficult to find a dead US soldier who could not be identified, but one was finally found. Furthermore, it is now quite possible that the previous three Unknown Soldiers could be identified if the tomb was opened. As stated by the above answer, the Unknown Soldier represents US soldiers who were killed but not identifiable for traditional burial. If the question is asking about the exact identity of the Unknown Soldier, the word 'unknown' should be a clue.
