In some states, voters receive mailings from the state giving information about candidates. In other states, voters must rely on the media, the parties and campaign events to learn about the candidates. In some states, registered voters receive sample ballots by mail before the election. In other states, sample ballots are printed in newspapers.

Voters may vote at polling places on election day. Some states allow early voting at the local election office or at satellite polling places. All states allow absentee ballots to be requested and cast by mail for voters who cannot be at a polling place on election day, but some states require that the voter have give a specific reason. In some states, almost all ballots are cast by mail and have been for decades. In others, almost all ballots have traditionally been voted in person.

The electoral college has one elector per congressional district, plus two electors per state. In some states, the winning presidential candidate in each congressional district determines which elector represents that district, while the statewide winner determine which electors represent the state. In other states, the statewide winner determines which delegation of electors represents the entire state, with no breakdown by congressional districts.

The electoral college elects the president by a simple majority vote. Because of the two extra electors per state, votes cast by voters in small states with just one statewide congressional district have almost 3 times the weight as votes cast by voters in large states with many congressional districts.
