Electrons are the negatively charged sub atomic particles.
If it has a positive charge it is a Cation. If it has a negative charge it is an Anion.
Thomson believed about atoms, that : An atom consists of a sphere of positive charge with negatively charged electrons embedded in it. Positive and negative charges in an atom are equal in magnitude, thus an atom is electrically neutral and it has no overall + or - charge.
A negatively charged particle is called an electron. Positively chared are call protons. Neutron is neutrally charged. Electrons. protons. and neutrons are part of the atom.

Each electron has a charge of -1, and each proton +1.But if the atom has the same number of electrons as protons, then there is no overall charge on the atom.It is a bit like having a bank account.
