A Firestone is a weapon solely used by a class of character called Manaketes. These are creatures that can turn into fire dragons with a firestone equipped, and they are quite powerful. The earliest manakete you can get in the game is Bantu (English name), who you should already have a Firestone for if you regularly visit villages. I believe it is possible to get another one somewhere at a farther point in the game, though, because they only have 30 uses each.
