X will be 0 in most cases, depends on the effect. If it's looking at the amount of mana paid to cast it, then it will be 0 if it is being brought back to the battlefield from the graveyard, it only counted as a value when the mana cost was paid for the initial cast.
it means if the oppdent is making a speel you can counter it and send it to the graveyard before they use the efect

There are a static abilities called Deathtouch and first strike. Deathtouch kills instantly and first strike allows a creature to hit an enemy before they can hit them. I have seen enchantments such as Bound in Silence and Cowed by Wisdom that put the creature out of play for X turns or until the owner pays mana. I usually play mono-white so i don't know much about other colors. There is alot of card that can destroy and exile creatures. When a creature is destroyed it is put into it's owners graveyard. When it is exiled it is removed from the game.
There is no burn card that does the most damage. Many burn cards have X in their casting cost and do X damage where X is extra mana paid and could be (theoretically) any number. Lightning Bolt is the most efficent burn card (R for three damage) magiccards.info is a great source with advanced search parameters to help you find what you are looking for.
