The game is basically programmed to freeze at the end of the game so that when you restart or reset, you will start back at Ganon's tower and you will be able to beat it again. I have yet to experience this, but if you leave the game sit long enough on the The End screen, you will hear ocarina songs, I think the Scarecrow Song that you create during the game with the scarecrow at the lake.

Once you have gotten the last Spiritual Stone, you must go back to Hyrule Castle where a cutscene is triggered. Zelda will throw the Ocarina of Time into the moat, so when the cutscene is over, retrieve the ocarina and Zelda will teach you the song of time.

The ocarina is a very old family of instruments, believed to date back thousands of years (the first known ocarina-like instruments appear about 12000 years ago). The earliest predecessors of the ocarina were made of natural materials such as stone, wood, bone, shell and gourd. The Chinese made clay whistles and early versions of the 'Xun' in 4000 BCE.
