In skyrim outside of the cities in the wild are there any empty or abandoned houses that can be used as a free player home that will not reset after a certain amount of time like in fallout 3?

There are a few unoccupied houses in Skyrim, which contain unowned beds and containers that do not respawn so it is safe to put your things in. In the related links is a list of the housing in Skyrim, 'free' housing is mentioned near the bottom.
.. and also you can buy a house in Whiterun, or get a room at the Winterhold College.
