Apparently the plane ejected its "passenger tube" during a storm when it was attacked by an enemy plane or planes. As Piggy said about the pilot, "He couldn't land here. Not in a plane with wheels." The passenger tube crashed into the jungle, causing the scar. When Ralph asked what had happened to it Piggy replied, "That storm dragged it out to sea. It wasn't half dangerous with all them tree trunks falling. there must have been some kids still in it."
