There was never a "take over." Russia was at war with Japan in 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War (in which Japan consistently defeated Russia).

Japan
True, for many years.
Hence the name World War Two, it was fought all over the world. From Africa to Italy, Japan to Australia. All over Russia, strecthing far out to Europe and even the middle east. The Pacific ocean was a battlefield. WW2 was everywhere.

For the Russians their battlefleets had to travel 18,000 miles one way just to get there. Their armies had to march or railroad a long distance to get to the front. Transportation was the problem. For Japan, they were running out of money and men. Resources were the problems.
Japan has an ongoing dispute with Russia over some of the Kuril Islands since 1945.
The first bomb was dropped over Hiroshima on August 9 1945. Russia declared war against Japan the next day and Japan had not surrender yet. On August 9 1945 another bomb was dropped over Nagasaki bring the Japanese to surrender. Russia was kept out of the pacific and the US stayed because Japan surrendered to the US. That brought tension and caused the cold war. The US were fighting Japan for nearly 5 years and when they were ready to surrender Russia fought Japan in Manchuria thus wanting to hold some territory.
