There must be a general election within five years of the last one so a Prime Minister can stay in office for ten years or more if he wins two or more elections.
For example. There was an election in 2010. David Cameron became the Prime Minister. There will be another election sometime between 2011 - 2015. If David Cameron wins the next election as well and remains leader of the Conservative party then he will be Prime Minister until the next election which will be sometime from 2016 - 2020. However he cannot stay Prime Minister for ten years without an election.
