In the book "Twilight", Edward Cullen left for Alaska after Bella Swan came into his Biology class and he was overwhelmed by her "scent" and an incredible desire to kill her, although he does not drink the blood of humans. He went to Alaska to get away from Bella for a few years until she left Forks. His family convinced him to return after a few days.
