The Pause/Break key was mainly used in MS-DOS days. You could press it to stop text from scrolling and read the page, or you could use it to pause a running program. You could also hold down the Control key while you press Pause/Break to possibly abort an MS-DOS program, particularly if it was hung. Ctrl-C was another combination used to abort programs.
