Some of the early Spanish explorers in Louisiana were Alonso Alvarez de Pineda, who mapped the Gulf Coast in 1519, and Hernando de Soto, who explored the Mississippi River in the 1540s. Another significant explorer was Cabeza de Vaca, who was shipwrecked near present-day Galveston, Texas, and later explored inland areas, including parts of Louisiana.

Sebastian Vizcaino explored the California coast in the early 17th century on behalf of the Spanish crown to map the coastline, establish settlements, and seek new trade opportunities. His explorations were also aimed at expanding Spanish influence in the region and securing Spanish claims to the land.
In addition to the Spanish, several European powers explored North America, including the French, English, and Dutch. The French primarily focused on the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes region, establishing fur trade networks. The English explored the Atlantic coast and established colonies, while the Dutch explored areas like present-day New York, known as New Amsterdam. Each of these powers contributed to the early European presence and settlement in North America.
