In November 1964, Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies announced the reintroduction of conscription for 20 year old Australian men from the middle of 1965. Selection was made by national ballot, the drawing of marbles (representing days of the year) from a barrel. If your birthday was drawn from the barrel, you were conscripted and notified by mail. If you failed to respond to the notice, more persuasive methods were used to get your interest.
