Material prosperity has brought him superficial social satisfaction, but only his land can provide peace and security. Even his final days are troubled, when he overhears his two older sons planning to sell the land as soon as he dies. Earth gave him food, land to farm, a house made of earth. Because of the land, Wang Lung survived. With the jewels O-Lan stole, Wang Lung bought more land. This land made him become richer and richer and leaded him into being the Old Lord like in the House of Hwang.
