Dally was carrying around an unloaded gun because he could scare away a soc is he had to. Also, he didn't think about this at first, but Dally was to much of a man to commit suicide so when Johnny died so when he pointed it at the police, they thought that it was loaded so they killed him which is what he wanted.

∙ 12y agoDally carried an unloaded gun in case of trouble. If the Socs were to come he would pull it out. They would think it was loaded and run. In the end of the book it was used for suicide. He held it up to the police (of course the police thought it was loaded) they shot him so they wouldn't get shot.
