Historically they walked or rode horses. Earlier they used dogs as pack animals, but these were replaced by horses at the end of the 18th century.
Dogs were probably originally tamed in Asia, long before the Indians came to North America. In other words, the Indians didn't tame dogs or wolves that were already here--wolves were already here, but dogs came with the Indians.

Like all Plains tribes the Cheyenne people raised horses and kept dogs. Otherwise a few may have raised certain animals as pets, but this was not common. Photographs from the 19th century usually show Cheyenne children playing with the camp dogs.
