What is the longest the totality of a total solar eclipse will ever last?

The longest duration of a total eclipse is 7 minutes 29 seconds.

Why people don't have full solar eclipse?

The Moon is smaller than the Earth, and MUCH smaller than the Sun. A solar eclipse is just the shadow of the Moon. So since the Moon is smaller than the Earth, the Moon's shadow is QUITE small; depending on where the Moon is in its orbit, only a hundred miles or less in diameter. Because the Moon is moving and the Earth is spinning, the Moon's shadow moves across the Earth fairly quickly, so that the longest possible solar eclipse is only about 7 minutes. The one in Asia yesterday (about 12 hours ago, as I write this) was 6 minutes 39 seconds, pretty close to the longest possible, and there will not be a longer one for 150 years or so. So only people along a narrow "path of totality" see the full eclipse. Either side of the path of totality, people see a partial eclipse, and the further away from the path of totality, the less complete the eclipse was. For example, the path of totality for this eclipse ran from northern India to central China. Someone in Singapore wrote yesterday to ask when the eclipse would be. Unfortunately, at Singapore, the eclipse was only about 6%, so he probably didn't even notice.

Where was the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century?

The eclipse of July 22, 2009 will be the longest eclipse this century.

What is the longest eclipse?

I checked a couple of places, and it looks like the theoretical maximum duration of the "total" phase of a solar eclipse at a given position is just over 7.5 minutes. The longest on record was 7 min 28 sec as seen in the Philippines in 1955. There's one predicted at 7 min 29 sec in 2186 near Surinam. For a lunar eclipse, the theoretical maximum duration of totality is about 1.75 hours.

Which is the longest solar eclipse?

The longest solar eclipse is about 7 minutes 40 seconds.

How long can a total eclipse in the sun last?

Totality itself can last for several hours, but the small end of the moon's shadow moves rapidly along the surface of the earth, so if you stay in one place and you don't chase the shadow, the longest totality you can ever see is something like 7-1/2 minutes.

When is the next solar eclipse going to happen in waterbury ct?

Probably 2017 Aug 21, which will be visible as a partial solar eclipse with about 70% coverage in CT. If you want to see the total eclipse, you'd have to travel some... the closest location at which the eclipse will be total is probably South Carolina. The longest duration of totality looks like it will be in western Kentucky or possibly southern Illinois (somewhere near the border in either case).

When is the next solar eclipse in Connecticut after August 21 2017?

While there is a total solar eclipse in the year 2017, the path of totality will NOT pass over the state of Connecticut. The Moon will block out about 75% of the http://wiki.answers.com/When_is_the_next_solar_eclipse_in_Connecticut#here in the North East.If you wish to see this total solar eclipse, and experience the longest portion of Totality of 2min 40 seconds then you MUST http://wiki.answers.com/When_is_the_next_solar_eclipse_in_Connecticut#to Christian County, Kentucky just northwest of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The last total solar eclipse that was visible in the state of Connecticut was January 1, 1925...the next total solar eclipse to be visible in the state will occur on May 1, 2079 and if you happen to miss this eclipse your next viewing will not occur until April 14 2200If you happen to miss the eclipse of August 21, 2017 your next chance will be April 8, 2024. The longest portion of totatlity occurs in Nazas, Durango, Mexico and darkenss will last for 4min 28 seconds. However to see the eclipse of 2024 you will have to travel to New York, Niagra Falls...to http://wiki.answers.com/When_is_the_next_solar_eclipse_in_Connecticut#Totality, because in CT only 85 to 90% of the sun will be blocked by the moon.

What is the maximum time for a total solar eclipse?

If you're standing in one place in the path of totality as it passes over, the longest possible duration is 7minutes 35seconds. Historically, roughly 9 out of 10 last less than 7 minutes. If you move to follow the spot of totality, then the time that you stay in it is extended. Scientists have used aircraft to follow the tip of shadow, stretching totality to 20 minutes and more. But the speed of the shadow across the earth's surface is generally so high that it's not possible to keep pace with it, and experience the full several-hours duration of totality.

Which breath mint lasts longer?

eclipse last the longest

How long does a toaltal solar eclipse take?

The tip of the moon's shadow may spend several hours racing across the surface of the Earth during a total solar eclipse. But if you stay in one place, then the longest period of time that you can ever observe 'totality' ... the entire disk of the sun completely covered by the moon ... is slightly over 7 minutes.

Where will the next eclipse be?

In 2017 there will be an eclipse in the united kingdom it will last 36 hours the longest known to man
