Charlie means the letter "C" in the US Military phonetic alphabet. This helps to stem wrong spelling in military radio transmissions; such as mistaking "C" for "D", "B", "E", etc. Example: "...this is Whiskey Papa Charlie 26 over..."; translation, "...this is WPC 26 over..." Answer During the Viet Nam War, the enemy were the Viet Cong. This was abbreviated as "VC" and when spoken over the radio using the above phonetic alphabet, it became "Charlie". So any Viet Nam soldiers were called "Charlie".
