It does not say 'who Jesus was' in any one particular verse. However, throughout the Old and New Testaments there are many. many references to just who he is... written by prophets hundreds of years before Jesus, by Jesus himself, by his disciples, and by Paul.

There is simply not enough space here to give a comprehensive coverage of all the references. Instead, here are just a few examples. I have concentrated on some of the prophecies (around 109 in all that could only apply to Jesus, and a couple of hundred more that prophesises a 'messiah' figure that are less specific) and just a few of the many references from John's gospel, although the other three gospels, and Paul's letters have many many references too:

1. Prophecies

Psalm (2,7): "The Lord said to me, 'You are my son; this day I have begotten you'"

Jeremiah 23:5-6 - "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Jeremiah 31:31-33 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah-- "not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. [The Word "Immanuel" means: God with us. In the Old Testament it occurs only in Isaiah. 7:14 and 8:8.]

Isaiah 9:6 written: 712 BC (Before Christ) - For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 11:10 written: 712 BC (Before Christ) "And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him, and His resting place shall be glorious."

Micah 5:2"But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity."

2. New Testament references from John's Gospel

John 8:24 "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I Am, you will die in your sins."

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." ['I AM' was the term used by God to Moses. By saying this jesus was equating himself with God himself. I AM in Hebrew is translated as 'Ya-Weh' or anglicised to 'Jehovah'].

John 9:35-38 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36 He ed and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? 37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. 38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

John 10:30-33 "I and the Father are one." The Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus ed them, "I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?" The Jews ed Him, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God."

John 14: 6-9 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him." Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, 'Show us the Father'?"

John 8: 12-14"Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world." They said therefore to Him, "Lord, evermore give us this bread." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."

John 11:21-27 Martha therefore said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You." Jesus said to her, "Your brother shall rise again." Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world." [Just after this he raises Martha's brother from death].
