The musical 'Wicked' is based on the earlier book, 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' [1995], that was written by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954]. The film rights were bought by Marc E. Platt [b. 1957] of Marc Platt Productions within Universal Pictures. Composer and lyricist Stephen Lawrence Schwartz [b. March 6, 1948] convinced Maguire and Platt of the adaptability of the book to the stage as a musical. And so the screenplay was written by Winnie Holzman [b. 1954] through meetings in the Los Angeles area with Platt and Schwartz.
