The Soviet Army suspected most SS men of having committed atrocities. If they could, SS men tried to get taken prisoner with ordinary regular German soldiers and remove the tattoo.
German courts never tried anyone for war crimes. The trials were conducted in Nuremburg Germany by an International Court composed of jurists representing the Allied Powers.
Prominent Nazis were tried after World War 2, in the city of Nürnberg (Nuremberg). The Nazis did not exist in WW1. (Although Hitler served in the German army.)
