They were assembled when they auditioned for a television series in 1965. When the series became popular the music became a gigantic worldwide hit, leading to a huge power struggle between the group and music supervisor Don Kirshner. Kirshner was fired and the group took over control of its music. Exhaustion, the eventual end of the television series, and periodic disagreements between the group members led to the group's dissolution in 1970. They have regrouped several times in the 1980s and 1990s and retain a strong following, both as a group and in their individual endeavors. Contrary to a long-standing myth, mass-murderer Charles Manson never auditioned for the series, as he was in prison at the time.
